Variations on a theme of are you sitting comfortably

At northlondonosteopaths Alan Nevies and his colleagues have been extolling the virtues of standing and moving. We are now saying you may sit after all (good news). On the floor (not such good news!)

In the Sunday Telegraph 21/5/23 an article titled “How Sitting on the floor for 30 minutes a day can help you live longer” featured the book by Kelly and Juliet Starrett, Built to Move. “Sitting on the floor, if you do it regularly, is one of the things that can help you become more proficient at getting down on the floor and then getting back up again without any support….. Spending time sitting on the floor with your legs crossed helps ward off decreased mobility and poor health”.

The specific benefits of sitting on the floor include restoring the hips range of movements and keeping bones, joints and tissues in their best working order. At northlondonosteopaths Alan Nevies and his colleagues would agree with the recommendations to sit less in a chair, practice the sit and rise test and sit more on the floor. The sitting positions may be varied to include sitting cross legged, or with legs out in front of or tucked to the side. Alan Nevies and his colleagues at northlondonosteopaths would be happy to give you specific advice on the best positions and methods that are tailor made for you in this area.

Don’t be surprised if your next visit to northlondonosteopaths you are invited to sit on the floor as there are no chairs in the waiting room!
